Inkjet printers, meet organ printers. Bioprinters are like souped-up versions of your office printer but instead of ink, they use “bio-ink” made from living cells.

The University of Tel Aviv bioprinted a 3D human heart, complete with cells, blood vessels, ventricles, and chambers. Although it’s the size of a rabbit's heart, this breakthrough brings us closer to printing life-sized organs for transplants.

Over 100,000 people in the U.S. alone are on waiting lists for organ transplants. Bioprinting could eliminate waiting lists entirely.

Hospitals might have bioprinters stationed right next to their MRI machines. Instead of waiting for organs to be shipped, they could print them on-site, like a fresh pizza delivery.

Today, bioprinting is still expensive. Printing a full organ can cost millions of dollars. But as technology improves, we might be able to print organs at the cost of a luxury car — or less. Currently, printing a full-sized 3D organ can take up to eight weeks to finish.
